Gyroplanes explained

What is a gyroplane?

A simple concept, easy handling and outstanding safety — which is why gyroplanes are becoming popular all over the world.

A gyroplane — also known as a gyrocopter or autogyro — is a relatively simple aircraft concept that is easy to fly, yet often historically misunderstood. Flown within its normal flight envelope it is very safe — like any aircraft.

How does it work? A comparison with other flying machines

A helicopter flies because its engine spins the main rotor, each blade of which is a wing generating lift. The direction of flight depends on the tilt of the rotor disc, and the tail rotor counters the engine's torque. Helicopters are fuel-thirsty, rather noisy, complex and expensive to maintain — but they can take off, hover and land vertically.

A fixed-wing aeroplane uses an engine and propeller to pull or push the wing through the air, and the airflow over the wing generates lift. If it flies too slowly it stalls, and every landing must be made above stall speed, so a runway or open area is needed to stop safely.

A gyroplane bridges these two technologies simply and effectively — exactly as Juan de la Cierva intended in the 1920s when he invented the “Autogiro”.

Autorotation — the heart of the gyroplane

The gyroplane's rotor is not powered in flight. As in an aeroplane, the engine and propeller push the aircraft through the air, and the airflow turns the rotor, which generates lift. There is no helicopter collective to manage and no aeroplane flaps or ailerons — they are simply not needed.

A gyroplane cannot take off, hover or land vertically. But because the rotor is driven only by the oncoming airflow, it keeps turning whether the engine is running or not. Even in a vertical descent, air flows through the rotor and keeps it spinning. This is called autorotation — hence “AutoGyro”. It allows very low-speed landings in a short distance, which is invaluable in the event of an engine failure, especially at night.

Wide speed range and stability

A gyroplane can fly very slowly — the minimum level flight speed can be as low as about 40 km/h (25 kt), and it can be operated safely at close to zero indicated airspeed. At the same time, recreational gyroplanes reach maximum speeds of around 190 km/h (105 kt).

The key is in-flight stability. The rotor blade tips travel at around 560 km/h (350 mph) — far faster than the airframe — and effectively slice through turbulence. Gyroplanes and their occupants cope well with turbulent air.

Very safe flying characteristics, low operating costs, excellent range — and phenomenal fun. Whether you want to fly for pleasure or for a living, see what an AutoGyro gyroplane can offer.

Advantages of gyroplanes

  • short take-off and landing,
  • low operating costs compared with traditional aircraft,
  • reduced susceptibility to turbulence and wind gusts,
  • the ability to fly low and slow — ideal for aerial photography and surveillance,
  • a high safety record thanks to autorotation and in-flight stability,
  • versatility: agriculture, search and rescue, surveying,
  • simple, intuitive controls,
  • less noise than helicopters,
  • operation from almost any flat surface — and from water with amphibious models,
  • low fuel consumption and emissions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the advantage of flying a gyroplane?

A gyroplane can take off and, in particular, land in very short distances, which makes it useful where space is limited or terrain is rough. Gyroplanes cope easily with turbulence and strong winds, making them very stable and safe in these conditions. They have a huge speed range and are safe and easy to fly from near zero to maximum speed. They are also relatively inexpensive to operate and maintain. And gyroplanes are simply enormous fun to fly!

What are some common uses for gyroplanes?

Since their invention in the 1920s, gyroplanes have found many applications — personal transport, search and rescue, military reconnaissance and agricultural operations. They are very popular among recreational pilots, who enjoy their unique flying characteristics and manoeuvrability.

Is it possible to visit the AutoGyro factory?

Yes. Visits to the Hildesheim factory must be booked in advance — we will be happy to help you arrange one. Please contact us.

Is it dangerous to fly a gyroplane?

Gyroplanes are regarded as one of the safest aircraft on the market. Thanks to autorotation they do not need a ballistic parachute — even in an emergency the aircraft remains controllable and a controlled landing can be made.

How is a gyroplane different from a helicopter?

A gyroplane looks similar to a helicopter but differs in several key ways. It flies forward only — it cannot hover — and its rotor is not driven by the engine. The controls are simple and intuitive — a stick tilts the rotor disc for roll and pitch, and rudder pedals control yaw. Gyroplanes are easier to fly than helicopters, and their systems are simpler and far less expensive to maintain.

How does a gyroplane fly?

Lift comes from an unpowered rotor turning freely in autorotation, while an engine-driven propeller provides forward thrust. As the gyroplane moves through the air, the airflow through the rotor generates lift and the aircraft flies.

Does AutoGyro build gyroplanes for more than two people?

Yes — the MTOtrigo is a three-seat version of the MTOsport 2017. However, most markets currently limit gyroplanes to two seats because of the maximum permitted take-off mass, so the use of the three-seat version is limited for now.

Do I need a pilot licence to fly a gyroplane?

No. In Poland the UAP(AG) pilot certificate is enough.

What does the training involve?

First a Class 2 aviation medical. Then theory training — online, at your own pace — and 25 hours of practical training. Finally a written theory exam and a practical test, both with the same examiner.

What does the price of a gyroplane depend on?

Mainly on the equipment — engine, propeller and avionics. We will prepare a quote for your chosen configuration — get in touch.

How is a gyroplane registered in Poland?

Our gyroplanes are on the list of approved types, so entering an aircraft in the register is straightforward. We supply all the necessary documents.

Where can I have my gyroplane serviced in Poland?

At authorised AutoGyro service locations. The current list with addresses and phone numbers is on the Service page.

How long does delivery take?

We often have aircraft available straight away. Individual orders — colour, engine, propeller, equipment — are delivered within 3 months at most.
